“Beginner Face Painting Success!”
Sent in by Mylene Losier
I am very new to the face painting world, but wanted to share a great experience I had starting out. I was recruited to do face painting for a childrens christmas party at my work. Needless to say I had no idea what I was doing, but I like challenges and accepted the position.
I went out and got books, ideas and practiced during the week I had to prepare. Yes! I only had a week to prepare! So here I am on the morning of that day, nervous, but also excited.
The first child I did wanted a dolphin, and I thought “Oh boy, I only studied christmas stuff!” But I smiled and said “Sure sweetheart!” and did the best I could. It wasn’t the prettiest dolphin out there, but she was so happy, it gave me the confidence to keep going. All the kids came to get cheek art or their face painted, some even came more than once!
At the end of the day, I had enjoyed myself so much, I decided to keep doing face painting.

You won’t believe this, but over the holiday my husband and I learned of 8 siblings who had been abondoned by their parents and living in a homeless shelter. Long story short they are now living with us! At the age of 33 I am now the parent of 12 kids total: 2 birth, 2 step and 8 because it was just meant to be. With lots of kids and no increase in pay I started thinking of ways to earn money. It had to be fun (I was already a full time career mom and community advocate), it had to be something I truly enjoyed (with so many kids I don’t have time for my own interest), it had to be something that I could also do with my family (I don’t get enough time with them alrady) and it had to pay well not to mention flexible hours. Face Painting emerged as a potential. Your site and resources were my primary introduction into Face Painting. Within a week of intense research on products, industry and potential gigs, I bought my snazaroo paints and brushes, lined up all my kids and started face painting. I love it! I have always enjoyed painting on canvas but never found time to get back to the brushes after motherhood. With face painting I’m a complete person. I’m making children happy, I’m connected to my community via fundraising for nonprofits, I’m connected with my children/models, I’m connected to my love of art and paint, it provides just enough money for extra things for the kids and for my vacation getaways. We haven’t had our first real gig yet. My company pays good money to hire face painters at community festivals that we sponsor during the warm seasons (I live in MN so its very cold still). I have a good chance at those conracts which alone will make my side busienss successful. As forever community youth leaders my husband and I have also picked up a few tricks in balloon animals and magic tricks not to mention tons of youth activities. Kids love us. I look forward to face painting at our community festivals with my older girls helping me with the line (I’ve taught them how to do nail art) and the rest of my family enjoying the festival popping in now and then to tell everyone I’m their mom.
thanks for everything!
