I would love to get some advice on starting up a face painting business. I have been face painting of about 5 years, but only for family and friends birthday parties. Please help! I am having a hard time getting my name out there.

  10. Karen Says:

    Hi Philadelphia

What a great idea!! Just purchased your book and have been practising like mad. Very cool designs and excellent instructions. As a beginner I am looking for all the advice I can get. For instance, when painting a line on the eyelid how do you stop a child from opening their eyes before it dries and so causing a messy blob?

Thanks for all your help and advice, keep up the good work. x

  11. Lillette Says:

Nice blog…. i would be interested in some more “adult” patterns as the clients I paint for are usually 16+… I do mostly face paint for ICP shows and the such…..

Gidday from OZ, Found the website yesterday and my daughter and i are so excited with the whole concept that we are going to start getting into it properly. She has done it for some businesses but wants to get going. Where is the best place to go to get all of the proper equipment from? Like metalic looking paint ect. Fantastic idea, cheers and hope it all works out for you! ;)

  13. Helen B Says:

    Hi Phil,
I have really had a lot of fun with your e-book, thanks. After doing a couple of low key kids parties I got enough courage to voluteer to coordinate the facepainting stall for our school fete! wow it was a buzz, 300 kids between 4 of us! thanks for all your tips. It was a great sucess - nt too many ‘mistake’ faces! hope to do even better next year.
Do you ever have trouble with white paint going clumpy? is it just the brand we’re using/its age? we were using Dervian. Also any ideas on how to stop paint crusting over with a skin between long uses?
    Thanks a heap!

I havent had time to practice on many faces, but just reading the book has inspired me to learn very quickly as im looking at opening my own party venue and you cant have a party venue without a face painter.

  21. Karen Says:

    Hi there
Really glad to see the blog get off to such a fantastic start. Lots of advice thanks a lot.

    Pattie:
When doing little kids I always adapt my designs so that I don’t have to go too close to the eyes, especially with the boys. When doing princess masks etc I use eye shadow on the eyes. It goes on just as well but doesn’t run. Take a look on the internet there are loads of great designs out there that you can use that steer clear of the eyes and still have that “WOW” factor.

Look forward to reading more of everyones experiences and tips.
    Take care
    Karen

  22. Karen Usher Says:

Hi again from OZ, hey are there any tricks to getting the lines more definite? We have been trying madly to get it neater but are getting no where fast. i figure we might be using the incorrect brushes/pressure maybe?? If anyone could give us a hand that would be great, or show us where to go, cant afford the book just yet. Aaaaaggghhh!

  23. Toni Anne Says:

First - what a good start for Philadeplhia - I have been getting your emails for a while and have been watching where it is going I have been painting for eleven years - eight of them I would say were professional more corporate than birthday - but all good fun. Congratulations!!

Note for Karen - brush size can make a difference - try a size six or four - six will give you the wide lines for say a spiderman and the for will give you the thinner web style inside. Availability a good taklon white brush is a good one to try - they are relatively cheap and available from spotlight!! With any lines the more pressure you put on the heavier the line - try placing just the tip of the brush and try using your pinkie finger as a guide by lightly running it in the direction you want the brush to go - takes a bit of practice but makes a difference. hee hee - I am typing this and trying to show you at the same time - sans brush!! good luck toni anne

  24. anna Says:

Thanks for reminding me to take a look. i have been so busy thanks to your encouragement and ideas. i have always been in the kid’s entertainment field but didn’t take the facepainting to a higher level. So I took a chance and now have been long line painting for several weeks at a resort . i was wondering if i should slow down, but the positive wow comments i have been getting reflect what you said about not having to be perfect. Thanks sooooo much. Anna aka Koo Koo the clown

  25. Lisa Says:

Hi! I just started dabbling in face painting this summer with my two girls. It’s an interesting canvas! I find that it makes good therapy since my children always want to get into my art when I am working, now they are my art! I am an art teacher and I have been approached several times about face painting for the parent/teacher organization at my school. I always shy away from it. If in the future I would be comfortable and willing to help them out during a fundraiser or something, I was wondering about liability. As long as I am using appropriate paints and materials for the face and body, could there be liability issues that face painters need to be aware of? Do face painters who do this as a profession carry liability insurance? What about people who might do it once in a while for fun at a party when asked? Would you have a waiver? (I am also a professional interpreter and carry liability insurance for that so I am may be too cautious about such things.) Thanx for your input! Lisa

    Hi everyone

Just read Karen Ushers message: Karen take a look on You Tube at Heather from Silly Farm’s videos (user name sillyheatherb). She has some brilliant tips including a couple of videos on swirls and curls which shows you how to do some brush strokes.

    Hope this helps

    Hi,
I am working on an adult face paint design for the stage. Our Toastmasters club is entering a “Wearable Arts”competition. It has been really difficult to find examples of face painting for adults, so I am designing my own to match the outfit.
So some more examples of adult / stage face painting would be appreciated.
